After a wave of criticism Danko also spoke out. SNS calls for abolishing the transaction tax: It's a disaster
The Slovak National Party (SNS) opposed the transaction tax, which it considers ineffective and harmful. It plans to officially propose its abolition in the next few days during the Coalition Council meeting. This was announced by the spokeswoman of the National Party Zuzana Škopcová.
If the SNS fails with the proposal, it wants at least fundamental changes. The party also announces that the abolition of the transaction tax will be a condition for its participation in any future government coalition.
Hungarian-style tax does not work
As the party recalls, "the transaction tax was introduced at the coalition council from the work of the Ministry of Finance on the model of the Republic of Hungary."
However, the SNS claims that the first days of its validity already show that it is a big problem for Slovak entrepreneurs: "It is obvious from the first days that this tax is a disaster for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, just as the Slovak National Party has always said."
The party is therefore calling for an immediate review of the entire tax system. "It is inconceivable that we should continue to use this consolidation tax regardless of the state of the public finances. It is high time for the Ministry of Finance to present a tax reform," the statement said.
The SNS also advocates fairer taxation "A systemic setting that reflects the fair principle of taxation, which is lower taxes for lower earners and higher taxes for higher earners," he explains.
Progressive tax rates, he adds, "are a common part of the tax set-up in the various member states of the European Union."
The SNS also points out that it has already pushed for several concessions in the consolidation process, "The Slovak National Party has managed to achieve a reduction in VAT to 5% in the area of catering and sports, as well as maintaining a 15% tax for sole traders and a 10% tax for legal entities with a turnover of up to EUR 100 000."
A condition for the next coalition
The party clearly states that the transaction tax is unacceptable to it. "The Slovak National Party is convinced that the transaction tax has no justification and that it should be abolished on 1 July this year, but no later than 1 January 2026."
Should the SNS gain a stronger position after the next parliamentary elections, "the abolition of this transaction tax will be a condition for SNS participation in any coalition."
"The state has enough tools to be able to ensure its functioning regardless of the introduction of such brazen taxes as the transaction tax. The first days show that this audacious and inefficient tax has no place in our tax system," she added.
Entrepreneurs are dissatisfied
The transaction tax has been in practice since 1 April. As we reported, a wave of criticism rose, especially after the first withdrawn payments began to leave the accounts of entrepreneurs. Opinions on it differ even within the ranks of the coalition. There has been no talk of abolishing it so far.
The transaction tax applies to companies and sole traders. 0.4 per cent of the value of each non-cash movement is automatically withdrawn. This is a measure that is part of the consolidation package for 2025. It has been criticised by the opposition from the outset.
